Crossbraces shall not be used as a means of access. (a): On or about July 31, 2023, The employer did not ensure that supported scaffolds had a ladder or equivalent method for employees to access the upper work platforms. Employees climbed the crossbraces of the scaffold, exposing them to falls of approximately 10.8 feet to the ground below. |

29 CFR 1926.451(h)(1): In addition to wearing hardhats each employee on a scaffold shall be provided with additional protection from falling hand tools, debris, and other small objects through the installation of toeboards, screens, or guardrail systems, or through the erection of debris nets, catch platforms, or canopy structures that contain or deflect the falling objects. When the falling objects are too large, heavy or massive to be contained or deflected by any of the above-listed measures, the employer shall place such potential falling objects away from the edge of the surface from which they could fall and shall secure those materials as necessary to prevent their falling. (a): On or about July 31, 2023, The employer did not ensure that scaffolds had toeboards installed to contain or deflect tools or equipment from the upper level. Employees operating on a lower level were exposed to struck-by hazards from falling objects. |

Moran Masonry, Inc. was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard 29 CFR 1926.451(b)(1) which was contained in OSHA inspection number 1120881, citation 1, item 1a, and was affirmed as a final order on March 17, 2016, with respect to a worksite located at Golf Road and Milwaukee Ave., Niles, Illinois. In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required for this violation (using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be included with your certification.
